Energy use in buildings across Europe accounts for about 40% of total energy use. Since the rate of new construction is relatively low (approx. 1-2% / year), the result is that approx. 80% of the existing buildings by 2050 will be those we use today. That is why innovation in existing properties is extremely important to save energy and to reach the climate goals.
To optimize the energy consumption and reducing carbon footprint with AI-driven self-learning buildings, focusing on Smart Heating Systems, WINNIIO has developed connected Digital Twin for schools in Växjö municipality in Sweden. The solution is set to optimize the flow of energy down to each radiator, ensuring an efficient heating distribution and reducing CO2 emissions for buildings.
300+ wireless mesh sensors and connected 200+ radiators with actuators are installed in 3 schools buildings connected with EDGE-native approach. 3D models of schools building are created from the drawings and coupled with the gaming engine for best visualization and collaboration. Bi-directional data flow enables the owner to control the radiators remotely. With the AI module, the system will learn from how it is being used and move closer to a self-learning adaptive system.
It provides an arena where different actors can understand the reality and innovate together. The combination of understanding what has happened, what will happen and to troubleshoot remotely will save time, and money for the real estate owner. And provide faster feedback loops between the users and the owners.

Systems today are great, but usually work in isolation, which leads to a thousand cuts problems for users, and it is almost impossible to transfer knowledge between different systems and people in different roles which makes the process inefficient, creating many broken feedback loops in the O&M process.
We set out to create a scalable solution working as a COMPLEMENT to existing systems, not as a replacement. With the idea of build virtually first, WINNIIO have created a BIM to Twin solution with the intent of digitally capturing contextual documents related to the O&M process of an installation and create an MVP for O&M to build the future on. Product 3D models are coupled and hosted in gaming environment with metadata details added on each parts of model. The model is placed with a real scanned environment to visualize how the model will look in real life.
It helps to understand a number of design errors and correction is done in advance before real installation. With the use of Gaming Engine, have the benefits of becoming platforms meant for both people (visual understanding) and systems (utilizing the back-end integration capabilities to create Digital Twins). The solution helped specific stakeholders to better understand what direction O&M should take based on feedback from the real world.
