What sovereignty means when the AI is yours
At Lindholmen Software Development Day on 20 October, Nicolas Waern will explore sovereign AI, AGI, quantum and digital twins, from organisational control to family AI and the Life Atlas vision.
On 20 October, I will speak at Lindholmen Software Development Day 2026 in Gothenburg, in the Sovereign Gothenburg track. The title is What sovereignty means when the AI is yours. It is a question that reaches from the architecture of an organisation to the everyday life of a family.
When an AI acts on your behalf, what have you authorised it to do? Who controls the information it uses, the tools it can reach and the decisions it can make? And how do you change the technology while keeping the knowledge, relationships and history that matter to you?
Sovereignty as an architectural choice
My focus is on the choices that make control practical: where intelligence runs, what crosses a boundary, how access is granted and how an action can be traced back to its authority. Edge computing, private networks and digital twins are part of that discussion. So is the ability to replace a component as needs change.
AGI and quantum computing extend the questions we need to ask. How should we prepare for more capable autonomous systems? Which assumptions about identity, trust and security need to be revisited as computing develops? I will explore these questions alongside the decisions we can make about our systems today.
Family AI and humans as APIs
I use the phrase humans as APIs to examine the human points of access in a connected world: our voices, identities, conversations and permissions. It raises a design question for personal AI: how can it help protect the person whose interests it is meant to serve?
Family AI takes that responsibility into the household. The ambition is to help people pursue their goals, coordinate responsibilities and bring in expertise when it is useful, while preserving each person's privacy and control. Protection belongs alongside assistance in that design.
Life Atlas: the last platform people need to buy
That is the ambition behind Life Atlas: the last platform people need to buy. A sovereign environment that develops with a person's life, where models, devices and services can evolve while the person retains continuity and control.
Digital twins give this vision a practical direction: connecting a person's history, present circumstances and future goals so that AI and human experts can reason together. Longevity and wellbeing are part of that wider life perspective. The starting point is what someone wants from life and which decisions will help them get there.
At Lindholmen, I will bring these questions into the software architecture conversation: what must we design today for individuals, families and organisations to remain in control as intelligence develops?
