The digital twin as the mandatory route to a decision

An idea that takes nine months to verify gets verified against a reality that has moved on. Decisions should be dismissed or proven in a model of reality before anyone touches the real thing.

Every decision gets a simulation environment before it is made. Always knowing more, before something happens, rather than after.

The problem picture

  • Decisions arrive unrehearsed. The expensive recurring call gets made on judgement and a spreadsheet, and the result is learned by living with it.
  • Knowledge stays where it happened. Capacity understanding sits with three people. The next person starts from zero, and the organisation pays twice.
  • Integration is never finished. Ten systems is forty-five possible connections. Each is a project, each breaks when either end changes.
  • The benefit does not travel. What was verified stays with the individuals who were in the room — neither reusable internally nor provable externally.

How the work actually runs

  • Start from as-is. Not a target architecture. The drawings, the spreadsheet, the systems already paid for — that is the starting material.
  • Requirements start at the decision. Wrong order: pick the technology, then find a use. Right order: which decision, which uncertainty must go, therefore this measurement.
  • Anchor to reality, not to each other. Systems disagree about everything except which physical thing they describe. Anchor each to the asset and the join comes free.
  • Test before you buy. Place the change virtually against the actual geometry and data. Simulate the failure modes, and dismiss most options digitally.

Method — one room, one shared model

The pattern is borrowed from NASA JPL's concurrent-engineering practice: put every discipline in one room against one shared model, and a study that took months finishes in hours. We run the same shape at company scale.

A workshop on your as-is, with the person who owns the numbers present from the first hour — so the business case belongs to you rather than to a supplier's slide. We open a map of your business and ask each stakeholder three questions.
